Acquiring Flowers

These flowers are confirmed to be in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, purchased from Leif's gardening store as seeds (which grow instantly): Red, White, & Yellow rose; Red, White, & Yellow tulip; Red, White, & Yellow pansy; Red, White, & Yellow cosmos; Red, White, & Yellow lily, Purple & White violet. Pink carnations are mailed to you on Mother's Day, and Red carnations on Father's Day. All species can be cross-bred to create at least an equal number of hybrid colors, as discussed below. Rafflesia sp. are jungle flowers that smell of death: they appear at the lowest town rating, through neglect or time travel too far. Jacobs Ladder (Convallaria sp., known in reality as 'Lily of the Valley') appear at the highest town rating: they indicate you have attained a 'Perfect Town'. Iris-looking weeds show no flowers and appear daily, less often during the Beautiful Ordinance: pull them out. Dandelions appear randomly; they are not weeds, and you can pick & blow their seed pods. Finally, Clover (with no blossoms) appear on the ground, even where there is no grass; they, too, are not weeds. If you let them collect until a rainbow appears, pulling one will give you a Four-leaved clover. (Shrubs are currently discussed at the bottom of the page.)

Leif's Garden Store

After the T&T Mart appears, perform 30 gardening tasks (weeding, planting fruit trees), and Leif will open his garden store next to the Nooklings'. He offers flower seeds, shrubs, regular & Cedar saplings, and the occasional watering can. Buy 50 seeds packets and you will get a Silver watering can, which waters as many as five flowers at once. Leif occupies a floor in the final, T&T Emporium, where he offers bamboo and fertilizer.

The Beautiful Ordinance

Seeds cost 80 bells for a packet that will grow one flower plant. Should you leave on vacation, the Beautiful Ordinance will have villagers plant & water volumes of flowers. Normal flowers (e.g red roses, yellow violets, white pansies etc) sell for 40 bells and hybrids (e.g. orange tulips, black cosmos, blue violets etc) sell for more (between 80 and 240 bells) at Re-Tail, If you switch to the Wealthy Ordinance, you can sell each for 48 bells or between 96 -288 bells respectively.

Island Flowers

Once you are capable of sailing to Tortimer's Island, a 'free' source of flowers appears on both Tortimer's Island and the surrounding Tour Islands. When playing Tour games, note which islands have which flowers. You can then travel there again just to collect If you are interested in cross-breeding flowers, note you will need many Red flowers. Neither Leif nor the Villagers offer many of these, but many Tour islands do. Get them there. Some also have both Purple and White violets in quantity. After obtaining a Silver watering can, island flowers (considering the 1000 bell sail) cost at most 25 bells a flower and can provide all your flower needs. They take up space in your home cabinet, however: consider collecting those needed to supplement Leif's and plant them immediately.

Watering flowers is easier that in earlier versions of Animal Crossing. Although the Silver watering can is much less useful, flowers sparkle and brighten slightly when approached, if they were watered that day by Villagers or you. (Darker flowers show the tinting better.) Some flowers will wilt when not watered one spurt a day, then disappear the next day. Some people water only the wilted flowers; whereas those likely to miss a day, or growing hybrids, choose to water all flowers each day.

Watering all flowers allows you, during one walking tour of the Village, to arrange the few flowers that spontaneously appear each day, move the hybrids that appeared that day, allow you to search for buried objects, and allow you to hit all rocks with your shovel. You may also greet your fellow villagers. .

Hybrids (self-sown flowers of a different color than its parents) are numerous. The parents must be the same species of flower, and usually one needs to be red. The images below list confirmed hybrids.
A self-sown flower can be a replica of a parent, or a hybrid. The parents need not be adjacent, but most hybridisers plant the pair this way.

Whether hybrids grow more randomly in time or in region means the following. Which will grow more hybrids: a bed of 100 parents on a random day, or 50 pairs randomly placed around the Villager over 100 days? If the answer is the former, large beds of parent flowers should have at least a space for every pair. If the answer is the latter, it is better to plant in pairs about the Village, and remove hybrids immediately (so another can take its place). If you wish to plant two adjacently, imagining each at the centre of a square of nine will show that two diagonal parents offer the most adjacent, empty tiles for a hybrid to grow in. The following list the simplest way of growing all hybrids.

'Jacobs' Ladder' (in Reality Lily of the Valley)
Jacob's Ladder

Jacob's Ladder will start appearing once you have achieved a perfect town rating. It is possible to obtain multiples since they continue to appear while your town maintains its perfect rating. The name of the flower is incorrect, since the flower is actually called Lily of the Valley.
It got its Animal Crossing name because the word used in the Japanese version translates to Jacob's Ladder. A real Jacob's Ladder can be seen here.

Wilted Flowers

Each day, some flowers in town will turn from their normal color to a light brown - these flowers are wilted. Running over, digging, or hitting these flowers with nets will cause them to be destroyed. The only way to revive wilted flowers is to water them with a watering can: this will cause the plant to give off a sparkling particle; however, it will not return to full health until the next day.

Shrubs are a new type of plant. Once planted they are very similar in appearance to saplings, and grow in stages like trees. They cannot be walked through or picked up like a flower, but can be dug up with a shovel. Unlike trees, shrubs can appear next to a tree if they were fully grown before the tree had been planted.

There are four stages in the growth of a shrub. The first stage is the sapling, the second stage is slightly smaller than a full-grown shrub and can no longer be walked through, the third stage is full grown, and the fourth stage is flowering (only during its flowering season). Shrubs cannot breed and will not be planted by villagers. They also never need to be watered (like trees).

Kinds of Shrub

There are five types of shrubs available: azalea, hydrangea, sweet olive, holly, and hibiscus (Hibiscus is tropical, though it grows anywhere in the Village; it is available only on the island for 5-6 medals). Hydrangea is available in blue and pink. Hibiscus is available in yellow and red. Azalea is available in white and pink.

Flowers & Foliage

The flowering seasons for the shrubs are listed on the following chart (example: Azaleas begin blooming from April 6th to 10th, then show flowers from April 11th to June 15th). Although the colours of the foliage change with the seasons, it would appear from the chart that the shrubs are always green when in flower or berry. A careful eye can also see subtle changes in the shape or colour between most shrubs' green leaves.
