Getting to the Tropical Island

Before heading to the island, you must pay your 39,800-bell mortgage to trigger access to the ferry service from the dock of your town. Tortimer, sporting tropical wear, will appear "under the spotlight" in the "dark room" as you load your game. That day, speak to him at the dock.

The following day, you can travel to the resort island (AKA Tortimer's Island)! At the dock, speak to Kapp'n to go to the resort island. The trip costs 1,000 bells, and Kapp'n will serenade you twice during the voyage (with sometimes bizarre lyrics). When he starts to sing, you can tap the "A" or "B" buttons or the touch screen to speed the voyage and immediately arrive. He doesn't seem offended. If multiple players are making the trip, Kapp'n will specifically ask whether you all want to listen to his serenade.

The Cabana

After disembarking on Tortimer's Island, look around the cabana. 'Grams', the grandmother kappa runs a gift shop on the right, but the local currency is the 'medal', which you win during tours. Items sold in the cabana are not available for sale in the shopping district and cannot be ordered from your Catalog. Buy a wet suit here and you can skin dive back at your town. Look for a Silver Axe. All purchased items go directly to the woven basket you just passed, and all items but tools gathered on Tortimer's Island or a Tour island go to your pocket or purse, which you must empty into this basket before each tour and before leaving. (This complicated procedure is just to let the game distinguish your items from Tortimer's.)

To win 'medals', see 'Leilani' at the counter on the left. Usually, a tour offers you three medals for completing the required task, and one extra for each competition item you collect in addition. There is a maxmal number of medals you can earn during each tour game. For example, a beginner tour may offer at most six medals, official tours may offer at most eight; it depends on the tour itself. You can play any game as often as you wish.

If your 3DS can visit other towns over the internet, fifty medals (60 with the bell boom) will enrol you in you in 'Club Tortimer', where you can play tour games with others chosen by Nintendo from around the world. The 'Club Tortimer' membership is located on the same table general area as the other items you can 'buy' with medals from the island.

Some Tour Islands are apparently on the equator (of another planet), for they are always in daylight. There are 64 tours, but only about eight or so a day are offered. Sign up with Leilani, then wait briefly in one of the four seats before the counter.

If the cabana or tour games confuse you, there is a library of on-line instructions on the left of the tour counter. Click to read.

Tropical fruit, wildlife, & flowers

Normally, after browsing, you will want to walk straight through the cabana to the Island proper. Don't forget to stop at 'Leila', on her mat, to see what Island objects to bring her and 'pway supermarket'.

Outside, your pockets will be empty. Note Lloyd, the over-worked gyroid. He will freely loan you tools you can use on the Island to collect valuable flora and fauna. Evening is a good time for fishing and netting beetles from trees. Slowly walk around the beach (beetles from palm trees are valuable). Sharks are abundant, and you can see large beetles on trees toward the center of the island. Borrow only a fishing rod and net, and you can switch with a tab click and have plenty of room before emptying your catch into the 40-item basket in the cabana. If you arrive early, borrow the wetsuit and dive for shallow bottom life.

The palm trees on Tortimer's Island have only one tropical fruit, and the other trees have only one as well. However, stopping to shake some from the Tour islands will quickly give you all tropical fruit. Tropical fruit from the tours can be planted on the island or taken back to your town. You can plant more trees on the island by using the tools that Lloyd provides. This will provide you with more spawning chances for rainbow stags and Giant stags who show up during the night.

TIPS: the tropical island Island is in perpetual summer and it rarely rains there. (Whether Coelacanths can be caught there during the rain is currently unknown.) The bugs and fish found there will not change with the seasons. This means you will find, for example, the scarab beetle every month of the year. This is particularly useful when collecting to sell for Bells, for expensive bugs and fish will always be found there. General tips on fishing, bug hunting, and diving can be read by clicking this link.

Valuables from the Tour islands

Your other reasons for being here are to win medals by playing the tour games alone or with friends on Club Tortimer (buy a membership only if you have a WEP-encoded, WiFi router), and collecting uncommon items from the Tour islands. There are almost as many islands as games. You can bring back items that are not those sought after in the game itself. Some islands have red flowers in abundance, some purple and white violets. To bring back, for example, a Petal dragonfly you see during a game, do the following: When you next play and hear GO!, stop before Lloyd and click 'A'; he will offer you a net and other tools to go collecting rather than play the game. Games last from 3 to 8 minutes, so clearly the longer ones are good for gathering valuables. Once you earn 40 medals, you are allowed to play more difficult Tours. After 120 medals, you are permitted to play Tours of advanced difficulty. You can earn up to 20 medals during an advanced tour.

Tortimer will keep his tools as you leave, so deposit your valuables in the woven basket upon returning to the cabana. If you leave Tortimer's Island with valuables (which can happen if you collect over forty), you will be warned clearly. Those valuables not switched with less valuable ones in the basket will be sold at 5% of their value, and this automatically deposited into your bank account. You cannot save while on resort island. You should go to the island with a charged battery or risk losing that day's catch.
